Writing on the Spectrum

Leave a comment January 9, 2025 Jessica McCann

My latest article at WritersDigest.com highlights why neurodiversity adds richness to literature and life, with tips to creating authentic characters on the autism spectrum.

Writing on the Spectrum: The Importance of Stories by and about People with Autism

The article also highlights the Arizona Author Book Festival taking place in Phoenix, April 27, 2025. I volunteered to coordinate the festival to help raise awareness and funds for SEEDs for Autism, an education, social skills and vocational training programs for young adults on the spectrum. Excited to be joining this stellar line-up of #histnov authors on 10/06/2026 for “What’s New in Historical Fiction,” a free virtual event hosted by publisher @historythroughfiction. If you're in the Pine/Strawberry area of Arizona, come join me at the @pinelibrary on September 28. 🌲🍓📖 Unexpected surprise getting to see @Mobringsplenty throw out the first pitch at the @dbacks game last night. He was gracious enough to stop for a photo with us, too. Very cool! When news first broke in Phoenix of the terrorist attack in New York, the director at my son’s preschool rushed across the street to the fabric store. She bought a giant box of safety pins and every spool of red, white and blue ribbon they had on the shelf. By the time parents started dropping off their kids, she handed us each a patriotic pin and assured us she’d do all in her power to keep our children safe that day. TVs were turned off and caretakers were instructed not to discuss the terror in front of the children. Check out this special box curated by my publisher for the anniversary edition of my novel All Different Kinds of Free. Includes a signed hardcover and a collection of bookish and story-inspired items to make your read even more immersive and special. 📦📖😍
